One of our returning Summer staff members, Dave, has written about his experience working at our Liverpool International Summer School.
I’d just finished my CELTA when I started my first year of summer school in Liverpool back in 2016. I remember getting my first register with the names of my first prospective students and feeling a mix of both fear and excitement, probably a bit more fear to be honest! However, after getting to know the students and getting into the swing of teaching, combined with the support of all of the team, I had an amazing first year in summer school and promptly signed up to do it all over again in 2017. In 2018 I was promoted to Activities Manager and in 2019 made the Centre Manager for the Duke Street Campus.
Some of the words I’d use to describe summer school are: intense, rewarding and at times chaotic, but above all, fun! Learning about students and their cultures from Russia to Brazil, Kuwait to Hong Kong is so interesting, and being able to show them the city I love is wonderful as well. In addition to the opportunity to explore Liverpool and do all the things you never think to do when you live here, through LSE I’ve been able to visit various cities around the UK too such as York, London and Manchester. It’s been great to experience what was on my doorstep for years, and to share it with the fantastic students!
As for the Liverpool School of English staff, I’ve made great friends over the years who I’m still in touch with now because of the great environment there and the fact you do absolutely everything together during the summer! And it’s for these reasons that I’m coming back from sunny Spain, and can’t wait to do it all over again this year!
