Liverpool Football Club are the Champions of Europe after beating Tottenham Hotspurs 2-0 in the 2019 Champions League Final last weekend!
The city was buzzing with anticipation leading up to the game as dedicated fans made their way to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. The game began with high expectations as the Egyptian King, Mohamed Salah, scored in the 2nd minute. Salah’s goal was the second fastest in a final since Paolo Maldini in 2005! Liverpool kept us in suspense throughout the match until Divock Origi scored in the 87th minute securing Liverpool’s victory! The city went wild and the party continued into the night.
On Sunday afternoon, Jürgen Klopp and the team travelled through the city in an open-top bus on their victory parade and an estimated 750,000 fans lined the streets to welcome the new champions and their sixth European Cup. Thousands of fans gathered along the Strand to finish the parade with fireworks and a loud chorus of the club’s anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone. Thanks to teacher Nikki for her photos from the parade!
It was a packed weekend in Liverpool as other events in the city were busy showcasing our maritime heritage. The River Festival (1st-2nd June) is inspired by the city’s maritime history and celebrates the Port of Liverpool as destination for world class culture, music, food, wine and art. One of the main attractions within this festival is the Bordeaux Wine Festival (31st May-2nd June) which invites you to treat your taste buds to Bordeaux’s best exports with 8 wine tastings and world-class food offerings on Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage Waterfront.
