These days we all have so many apps on our phones. But which are truly useful? And which ones will help you during your stay in Liverpool. In this blog you can read about our favourite apps to make life easier, more organised and hopefully more fun!

Independent Liverpool

Independent Liverpool is an exciting network of independent businesses in the city. We predict you’ll be spending lots of time exploring the city and with this app you can enjoy instant access to fantastic discounts and deals at over 110 of Liverpool’s very best independent cafes, bars, restaurants, theatres, pubs, cinemas, hotels, shops and experiences. There is a small monthly fee for the app but we’re sure you’ll use it!

Busuu

Joining us at Liverpool School of English is a great decision for boosting your language skills. Studying in Liverpool will surround you with real English and endless opportunities to have a chat. While you’re on the bus or waiting for your friend to finish class you can keep your English alive with the Busuu app. The quick and fun activities will boost your vocabulary and revisit skills you’ve learned in class to help them stick in your mind to boost fluency.

Microsoft Teams

We use Microsoft Teams to communicate with you during your course (in and out of class). To reduce the number of things you’ll be doing on your first day of school (you’ll be very busy and meeting lots of new people!) it’s a great idea to download the app on your phone/tablet in advance.

 TheTrainline

Maybe you’ve read our past blog about travelling by train in Liverpool (insert link) and fancy exploring the local area or further afield? TheTrainline is a really easy way to check times, compare prices and buy train tickets for all rail services in the UK. For some services you can even download and keep the ticket in the app. This app is a must-have for students using the train in the UK!

Google Maps (for public transport)

Like the train network in the UK, bus services are privatised so you’ll see different companies and colours of buses. In Liverpool Arriva (green buses) and Stagecoach (red, blue and white buses) are the most common. Instead of visiting multiple websites to check times from your local bus stop, use the Google Maps app to find out live journey information. Open the app, zoom in and tap on the bus stop of your choice. Here you’ll find out information about the upcoming buses at this stop.

Google Translate

Our fifth recommendation (and second app from Google!) is the Google Translate app. If you’re just starting your language learning journey then Google Translate will give you extra confidence when moving around the city. The camera function allows you to point your phone at a sign in the street and you’ll see an immediate translation of the words into your language – it’s magic!

Try to avoid using it in class though – it’s better to try and explain the meaning using similar words – don’t give up!
