About the course

The TRINTY TESOL cert is one of the leading internationally recognised teaching qualifications and gives you the option of teaching ESOL in the UK or abroad. The Trinity Cert TESOL is an initial qualification for those who have little or no experience of teaching ESOL. This course will equip you with everything you need to become a skilled, knowledgeable, confident teacher of English as a second language.

Our course will be delivered by our highly qualified and experienced team of teacher trainers, all of whom have experience of teaching English both in the UK and abroad. Our enthusiastic teacher trainers will guide trainees throughout the course, providing them with all the support, practical knowledge, skill and experience needed to successfully achieve the Trinity CertTESOL.

Who is the course for?

Trainees must be 18+, previous experience in teaching is not necessary but applicants are required to have qualifications for entry into Higher Education ( A-level, BTEC national Diploma) in the UK or trainees' home countries or to have evidence of equivalent academic study for example, IELTS(7), TOEFL(6) or Cambridge ESOL .

The course requires trainees to demonstrate a level of spoken and written English which will enable them to teach over a range of levels and to cope with the demands of the course. The course is an intensive 4 week course so trainees will need to have a high level of dedication and motivation and be willing to work as a member of a team.

Typical applicants for the Trinity CertTESOL course are;

University or College Graduates

Teachers of other subjects

Professionals looking for a career change

Individuals interested in living and working abroad

Gap year students

The course aims

The course aims to develop trainees' knowledge and understanding of the process of learning and teaching. With our trainers' guidance and support trainees will be equipped with the basic skills and knowledge needed to take up a teaching post and be given a firm foundation for reflective teaching and further professional development.

  • understand the main phonological, lexical and syntactical features of modern English
  • become aware and appreciate the needs and motivation of individual and groups of learners
  • meet the needs of these learners by designing and delivering effective lessons
  • evaluate, use and adapt published teaching material and create simple teaching material of your own
  • understand and be confident in various teaching approaches through a variety of classroom aids

Course outline

The course is divided into 5 units;

Unit 1- Teaching Skills (79 hours)

Trainees will learn how to effectively manage and teach a communicative ESL class using a variety of teaching methods and techniques. Examples of which include numerous methodology input sessions relating to classroom and teaching practice, observations of experienced teachers and feedback sessions with tutors. A component on this unit is also provided for trainees to reflect upon and evaluate their teaching skills.

Unit 2- Language Awareness (21 hours)

These sessions enable trainees to understand English grammar and phonology and identify the difference between form, meaning and function. This unit is often challenging for trainees as most native English speakers are not overly confident in the area of grammar and phonology. This unit will provide trainees with the support and confidence to understand and explain clearly to their students how English works!

Unit 3 - Learner Profile (10 hours)

This unit involves trainees working closely with a student from the school, understanding their background, needs, interests and strengths and weaknesses in the English language. Methodology input sessions with tutors will culminate in trainees teaching the learner a 1:1 lesson.

Unit 4 - Materials Assignment (14 hours)

Materials used in ESL [English as a second ( other) language] are numerous and varied. It is important for trainees to be able to identify strengths and weakness in the materials in order to use them effectively and productively in ESL lessons. The unit will also enable you to adapt and create your own resources, a necessary skill in the ESL world.

Unit 5- Unknown Language Journal (7 hours)

A challenging and interesting aspect of the course, trainees become language learners and participate in 4 hours of lessons in an unknown language. This enables trainees to have first-hand experience of what it is like to be the student, identify challenges that students face and to experience communicative language learning.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment of teaching practice, this will take place on most days of the course.

Language awareness and phonology tests

There are 4 written assignments - TP journal, materials assignment, learner profile, unknown language journal

In order to be awarded the Trinity CertTESOL, trainees must attend all sessions, complete all written assignments, tasks and tests and also pass all five course units.

The first stage will be a group interview, at this time you will also be asked to complete a number of pre-course tasks that will be discussed between you and the course tutors in stage two of the interview. Applicants that are not able to attend a face to face interview will be considered for a skype interview. At the interview you will be able to discuss any queries or concerns that you may have about the course. It is necessary for trainees to have access to a number of books. Please see the reading list below.

Reading List

Essential Reading

There is a wide range of grammar, methodology and activity books for reference and for use when planning your lessons. These are found in the school's Trinity CertTESOL library and in the teachers' preparation room. However, as there will be much demand for the 'essential reading titles,' we ask that each trainee has their own grammar book and their own copy of either 'Harmer, J The Practice of English Language Teaching' (Longman) or Scrivener J - 'Learning Teaching' (Macmillan). Homework preparation and consolidation tasks will be set from these.

Please choose a grammar book for lesson preparation from the following titles:

Murphy R- English Grammar in Use (CUP)

Swan M- Practical English Usage (OUP)

Parrot M- Grammar for Teachers (OUP)

Bolitho R & Tomlinson B - Discover English (Macmillan-2nd edition)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Trinity CertTESOL and CELTA ?

Both courses teach English as a secd (other) language, they just have different examining boards. The examining body for the Trinity CertTESOL is Trinity College London and the examining body for the CELTA is the Cambridge exam board (UCLES). Both courses are internationally recognised and are the only teaching qualifications The British Council will accept in the language schools they accredit in the UK

Are all "TEFL certificates" the same?

No. Anyone can write a teaching course and issue something called a "TEFL certificate". Most reputable schools will ask for a recognised accreditation. The two most popular are the Trinity TESOL certificate and the Cambridge CELTA certificate. These courses have elements that most schools require: over 100 hours of tuition, 6 hours or more of observed lessons with ESOL students, external moderators.

What is the difference between EFL/TEFL/ESOL/TESOL?

Don't worry about it. These are different names for broadly the same thing: Teaching English to people whose first language is not English. This could be school students studying in the UK for a few weeks over the summer, it could be someone applying to study law at a British university. It could be a businessman learning how to deliver a presentation fluently and confidently or it could be a new migrant to the UK learning to fill in a form at the doctors.

Can I do part time work at the same time as the TRINITY CertTesol course?

It is definitely not advisable to work at all during the 4 week intensive course. The amount of work required is considerable. Trainees are expected to attend classes every day from 9:00 - 18:00 . As well as input sessions every day, trainees need to complete written assignments, observe peers and experienced teachers and prepare for their own taught lessons. Also put all family and social commitments on hold for the whole month!

Do I need to speak another language?

No. All lessons are taught in English, although some experience of learning another language will help you empathise with your learners.

Do I need previous teaching experience?

No. Many people taking the course have not taught before, although experience of delivering presentations, or any kind of training may be useful.

Is it easy to find work as an EFL/ESOL teacher?

There are many opportunities both in the UK and abroad. The summer period in the UK, from June to September, is particularly busy and even inexperienced teachers with an accredited certificate will be able to find work easily. Outside these months works is still available at private language schools, local colleges and pre-university courses, but these positions may require more teaching experience. Outside the UK there are opportunities at all levels, although pay and benefits will depend on experience, ranging from a reasonable standard of living to positions including free apartments and flights.

Will you help me find a job after the course?

Yes. The course has sessions on how to apply find and apply for work in the UK and abroad. The school will provide references and a course report to all prospective employers. Towards the summer langauge schools, including The Liverpool school of Enlish, will be looking to hire teachers for their busy summer period.

I do not live in Liverpool; will the school help me find accommodation?

The school is able to offer home stay accommodation at £110 per week including meals for trainees who are not local residents.

What I liked about the school was the teachers (so amusing), the classes, making friends and learning good old English, that’s what I’ve been here for! I would totally recommend to a friend because it’s been an experience I’ll keep dear and close to my heart for good. Everybody should have an opportunity like this one.
