General English is our most popular course. Its aim is to improve all areas of your English language competence: speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Our qualified teachers use the communicative approach and task-based learning to deliver dynamic lessons. You will develop your ability to communicate confidently in real-life situations. Our Academic Team carefully select course materials to ensure that lessons are relevant and interesting to our students. Our teachers ensure that each lesson has clear learning outcomes. You will have regular progress tests and tutorials with your teacher to ensure that your English improves as much as possible and you succeed in achieving your goals. We know how important it is to have a course that fits around your needs and availability which is why we offer 6 different options for General English:

Your General English course includes an afternoon elective if you study more than 15 lessons per week (GE21, GE25 or GE30) and your level is intermediate + (CEFR B1+). If you do not know what your level is, you can take a quick test here. Our afternoon electives allow you to personalise your learning and focus on your specific learning goals. We currently offer the following afternoon electives:

Click here to see all of the elective options. Students at Beginner – Pre-intermediate levels (CEFR A1 – A2) do not select an afternoon elective. On GE21, GE 25 or GE 30 courses students take a level appropriate Communication Skills class for 6 lessons per week. Part- time students on GE6 or GE 10 courses with an intermediate + level (CEFR B1+) can also take an afternoon elective.

  • CAS Fee (For non-EU students applying for a Tier 4 General Student Visa) £21 (subject to change) *
  • Courier Fee £75 (For students who require a hard copy of their visa letter for their visa application) *

*these fees are dependent on the type of Visa the student has

Which General English courses have the afternoon elective?

You can take an afternoon elective as part of any General English course that has afternoon classes, these include: General English 21 (Standard Plus) General English 25 (Intensive) General English 30 (Intensive Plus) General English 6 (Part-Time) (Afternoon option only) General English 10 (Part-Time) Click here to see all of the elective options.

How long are the lessons?

The lessons last for 55 minutes

I am Beginner level; can I do a General English course?

Yes, if you are a Beginner you need to start the course within the first 3 weeks of a new term. New term dates are: June 19th 2017 – September 11th 2017

Can I change my afternoon elective?

Yes. You can change at any time and start a different afternoon elective the following Monday

Can I do more than one afternoon elective?

You can only study one, afternoon elective at a time but you can change your afternoon electives during your course

How much does it cost to take the afternoon elective?

Afternoon electives are included in your course fees so you don’t need to pay any extra

Are the afternoon electives guaranteed to run?

We need 3 students to run an afternoon elective. If we have fewer than 3 students in a class, we will ask if you prefer to take a different afternoon elective or we will offer you 3 lessons of 1:1 or 2:1 classes in place of the advertised 6 lessons per week

How many weeks is the maximum for each afternoon elective?

Generally, we recommend that after 12 weeks of an afternoon elective, you change to a different class
